sass - What's the need of css preprocessor when we have css variables?

Question

I have read some of the answers in here. It says that we use css preprocessor to get rid of the copy pasting code. Now my question is why we need to use any preprocessor(saas, scss), when we have css variables for that. I have also read there that sass is a extension for css. Then Why we need to make our files big using an extension of css? And the css syntax seems pretty easy and simple rather than any css pre-processor. Then why need to use that complex syntax of sass.
